'Dominance' (DOM) measures the % OF PLAY DOMINATED by tracking the amount and length of time that a team's Momentum Meter is higher than the other.

MVP

'Most Valuable Player' (MVP) measures not surprisingly the MOST VALUABLE PLAYER by calculating the amount of EXTRA Point Shares the player has earned compared to a replacement player (e.g., an AHL junior call-up) at his position, and then converted to a percentage of his team's total points in the standings (taking out the loser points first).

In simple terms, MVP tells us how what % better that player make his team in the Standings for his role and position.

PS

'Point Shares' (PS) measures ACTUAL PLAYER VALUE to his team by calculating his share of the total team points in the standings earned by his performance and ice-time.

Atlantic Division Showcasing Best of What NHL Has to Offer

The National Hockey League has many talented and elite hockey clubs but one division in particular has both.

The league’s Atlantic Division is home to three top-10 teams in the Philadelphia Flyers (2nd), New York Rangers (7th) and the Pittsburgh Penguins (9th). Furthermore, these three clubs are also in the top 15 in our Power Rankings along with the New Jersey Devils:

For those of you who are not familiar, PowerScout's Power Rankings is calculated from a weighted mix of 11 statistics that our research proved were important factors to winning. Every single day, we re-calculate each team's POWER for those 11 factors in their last 5 games, and then re-rank them.

With that in mind, we will start with the Flyers. When looking at the Flyers, it is easy to see why they are atop the Atlantic Division. PowerScout’s rankings indicate that the Flyers are 1st in line-up strength, 9th on special teams, and are 7th when it comes to being the most dominant. Put that all together and you have a lethal hockey club, even without the likes of a future hall of famer in Chris Pronger.

Going into the 2011-12 NHL campaign, many hockey pundits knew that the Rangers were going to be good but just did not know how good they would end up being this season. As you can see above, the team is third in PowerScout’s NHL Power Rankings and are in the top 10 in several of PowerScout’s important levels including league (7th), conference (4th), power rank (2nd) and special teams (7th).

For much of the season, the Penguins have been devastated by injuries whether it was/is Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jordan Staal, Kris Letang, Zbynek Michalek, Paul Martin and Richard Park. With that said, the Penguins have done everything they can to remain one of the league’s top clubs.

In fact, the Penguins are in the top 10 in every one of our important rankings. The team is ninth in the league, fifth in the Eastern Conference, 7th in terms of our Power Rankings, second in Special Teams, fourth in Line-up Strength, second in Most Dominant and is the 6th hardest working NHL team.

With a lot of hockey left still to be played, it will be interesting to see just how far the Atlantic Division can go not only in the regular season, but come Stanley Cup Playoff time as well.
